Coalition Organizations Demand a Fair and Transparent Special Session

A federal judge decided that Georgia’s congressional, state senate and state maps violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dilute the power of black voters, and must be redrawn before the 2024 elections. In his 516-page decision, the federal judge also ordered the drawing of two new Black-majority districts in the state Senate and five new Black-majority districts in the state House by December 8th.

As a result, Georgia's Governor has announced a special redistricting session to begin on November 29th where new maps will be voted on.

Despite the short time frame, the special session requires transparency, fairness and respect. Our coalition partners issued a letter demanding committee members to adopt guidelines to ensure confidence in the outcomes. Read the letter outlining their demands.
