The Georgia Redistricting Alliance on Moore v. Harper: “If Moore succeeds, it will upend our democracy.”

Monday, December 5, 2022  (ATLANTA, GA) -  In advance of oral arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court case, Moore v Harper, this week, the Georgia Redistricting Alliance released the following statement highlighting the imminent threat of the case on U.S. democracy:

Every voter in America should have the right to cast a ballot in free and fair elections and have an equal say in the future of our families and our neighborhoods. Unfortunately, this week, that right will once again come under attack before the U.S. Supreme Court with the case Moore v. Harper.

“If Moore succeeds, it will upend our democracy,” said Helen Butler, Executive Director of the Coalition for the People’s Agenda. “It would also restrict our freedom to vote for issues that matter most to us, like better schools, affordable healthcare, and a stronger economy.”

Moore v Harper would allow state legislatures to eliminate checks and balances, manipulate our elections, and undermine our vote, without any opportunity for recourse by state courts, governors, or others. Even worse, it will disproportionately impact voters of color and supercharge the kind of voting restrictions we’ve seen pass in recent years in states like Georgia.

“It’s time to put people over politics and reject attempts like Moore to destroy our critical checks and balances and place doubt in our elections among voters,” said Jerry Gonzales, CEO of GALEO. “With this case, the Supreme Court could take power out of the hands of voters and place it in the hands of power-hungry politicians.”

We need to build a democracy where everyone participates, every vote is counted, and every voice is heard. “People deserve fair representation that reflects their values, views, and voices. Our coalition will continue to advocate against legal precedent that would undermine that aim,” said Karuna Ramachandran, Redistricting Director for ProGeorgia. The Georgia Redistricting Alliance will continue to fight against all efforts to undercut our democracy by suppressing the right to vote and will reject any decisions that threaten voters’ power.
