ATLANTA, GA - June 27, 2023
- Today, the Georgia Redistricting Alliance released the following statement supporting the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in the Moore v. Harper case:

The Supreme Court’s decision in the Moore v. Harper case is a crucial win for voters of color and our democracy. Moore v. Harper had the potential to erode our democratic safeguards and representation for marginalized communities and set a precedent far beyond North Carolina. Today’s decision impedes a concerted attack on democracy and redefines the role state courts play in our elections.

“The Supreme Court’s decision is a significant win for both voters of color and our democracy as a whole,” says Karuna Ramachandran, Redistricting Director for ProGeorgia. “Moore v. Harper threatened to shatter checks and balances in the democratic process, subsequently undermining the right to vote particularly for voters of color. While this is a hard-fought and rewarding victory, we will continue to push back on persistent attempts to restrict the right to vote and uphold our democracy.”

Anchored in the controversial “independent state legislature theory,” Moore v. Harper represented a pattern of systemic and discriminatory congressional mapping in Southern states designed to dilute the voting power of marginalized communities. A reported 46 lawsuits have been filed in 22 states – almost all southern – seeking to overturn congressional maps drawn in 2021 and 2022. While we support the Supreme Court’s decision, we will continue to advocate for federal, state and local reforms and legislation that the right to vote at every turn.
